These 3 chaps are hanging out at Babes in the Wool along with quite a few other similar looking friends. I created them in a variety of chunky yarns (James C Brett, King Cole) and added a little tinsel and fluffy yarn too.

Hamish stands at around 18" tall and is weighted so he could be used as a doorstop. He would also be happy sitting underneath a Christmas tree or standing on a hearth. He really is quite charming and fairly easy to do. The trickiest part is his beard which is worked in crochet fur stitch, which will need a little patience and some practise to complete. A bell for the top of his hat completes his look.

The crochet pattern is available from Babes in the Wool, 113 Newland Avenue, Hull.

Happy Hookin'

So after a few experiments, I came up with this one. A red cap with cream spots and a cream stalk and gills. It is quite large at about 20 cm tall and 20 cm at its widest part.

After I stuffed it, I thought it was the ideal size for adding a fairy door to. So out came the polymer clay and I made a door, some leaves and a few roses. Now that they are all glued in place, I think it looks really effective.

For the next few weeks, this toadstool is sitting in the window at Babes in the Wool along with other woodland themed items. There are a couple of owls, quite a few mushrooms, toadstools and leaves and even a snail and a slug. Hedgehogs will be the next creatures to be added in the next few days.

Call by, have a look in the window and come into the shop for a chat.

Happy hooking xx

Both the owl and the jointed cat on the right, are looking a bit startled at the grinning evil-looking Cheshire cat. The blue cat evolved as I felted his eyes and hair into place and he demanded the scary grin. Isn't it strange how some projects turn out?

All three animals were made using multi-strands of yarn. For the Cheshire cat and owl, I used 2 strands of James C Brett Marble Chunky and for the jointed cat I used 3 strands of dk yarn. It's a great way to both make a larger version of a pattern as-well-as a great way to use up oddments of yarn in your stash.
This hat is HOTH (hot off the hook).

This is such a warm hat for the cold days we have been having. The textured pattern of the owls is made by working cable-style stitches and I think it looks extremely effective. The owls have eyes made from buttons. The yarn is an acrylic/wool mix so you get the benefits of the hat being soft, warm and durable.

I have some more of this lovely Aran yarn and think that this hat would look just gorgeous in grey, caramel and other natural colours.
I started these socks quite a while ago and finally finished them on New Year's Eve. I tried them on to photograph them but then kept them on for the rest of the day. They are so comfy to wear and fit so well under my boots.

The yarn is Noro Kureyon Sock Yarn and is a wool/nylon mix. There are beautiful colour changes within each ball. I have quite a number of balls of this yarn, in different colours. I really am spoilt for choice for my next pair of Noro socks.

This pair was worked on 3mm dpn have a picot top, lace ribbed leg and instep, v heel and origami toe. The toe seam is stitched using the Kitchener technique so there is no seam.

I already have two more pairs of socks on the go, so before I start another pair, I need to finish these first. My challenge to me is to finished both pairs in two weeks and then I will be well on the way to finished another pair before the month is out! Well, here's hoping!
I have been customizing crochet hooks for a couple of years now and find that they are easier to use than the bare hooks. Here are just a few of the owls which have been crocheted by some of the "Carry-on Girlies". The heights range from about 10" to 20" and all have quite an individual look about them - different yarns, buttons for eyes and some needle felting.
If you would like to see them in person, then come along to Babes in the Wool, Newland Avenue, Hull. I think they are going to be in the window until the end of January 2014, and don't forget to pop into the shop and say hello.
Where did 2013 go?So time flew so fast last year that I ended up only making two blog posts.

A lot of my time was taken up with crocheting, and afterall, crocheting is very addictive.

I taught myself to crochet 30+ years ago but didn't really make a lot at the time and I went back to knitting and lots of other crafts instead. But about three years ago, I was shopping with my teenage daughter and we found a book on crochet and I thought it looked good for refreshing me and also for guiding my daughter into a new skill.

The book is The Crochet Bible and I have to say that it is excellent. It covers just about everything you need to get started in crochet and also has many projects for the different skill levels.

After completing many crochet projects I was given the opportunity to teach crochet to beginners. So, since the beginning of 2013, that is what I have done, and this is also where a lot of my time was taken up.

I also spent about 7 months knitting a Gansey for an exhibition held at the Hull Maritime Museum. Now that was a task and a half! The pattern I worked was the Humber Keel in a tightly spun 5-ply worsted wool in cream.

Gansey's are a traditional fisherman's sweater, knitted in the round on 5 steel needles worked in individual patterns for each fishing village/community. Rather morbidly, the patterning helped with identification; if a fisherman's body was found after an accident as sea, they could be returned to the village where they were from, all because of the design on the jumper they were wearing.

I have to say that at times I wondered if I would ever get the jumper finished, but I certainly did, even if it did take me right up until the final deadline. In the final couple of weeks I spent so many hours knitting that my wrists were extremely sore. I rested them by doing a lot more crochet!

The finished jumper fitted lovely and was so comfortable to wear, but wasn't mine to keep. I plan to get myself some wool and get a similar design on my needles soon. I just have to decide on what colour to make.

Visiting the museum and seeing my work on display was a treat for me. I visited the exhibition 3 times and felt proud to have been given the opportunity to knit one of the 10 regional Ganseys on show which had been knitted specially for the Hull Maritime Museum.

I also spent some time teaching jewellery classes, continued my journey with polymer clay and also learned rag-rugging and needle felting. So all in all, I had a very crafty year which helped to prevent my sanity from leaving me completely!

What's in store for 2014? More crochet, more knitting, more polymer clay, more needle felting, more rag-rugging, more sewing and I am planning to re-visit quilting. And of course, more frequent blogging!

Watch this space, another post coming soon.
I made this bangle last year and entered it into an exhibition at a local art gallery. Using various blue and cream beads I finished it with some silver plated wirework. This is another design which I will be revisiting in the near future. I'm not sure what the twist will be yet, I'll have to see what the gems tell me to do!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3233928826636583513.post-55986222958938299282013-01-01T12:00:00.000+00:002013-01-01T12:00:09.780+00:00New Year, New Start

I have a number of designs and makes from last year (seems weird writing that) which I haven't shared on here yet. So over the next few days, I will post photos of some of my favourite makes.

This bracelet is made using faceted Haematite, Quartz and Agate beads on a black silk cord. I finished the bracelet with a simple macrame knotted closure. I made it as a gift for a close friend who loves everything black, and guess what? She loves this bracelet.

p.s. I so wish that I hadn't accidentally deleted my previous blog - so many posts, so much information, so many tutorials, so many links, all gone forever.
I found myself at a bit of a loose end on Saturday, so I decided to make a crochet bag. I found the inspiration and pattern for the flower square here. Instead of using different colours, I used Noro space-dyed yarn. The other adjustments I made to the bag were adding a simple strap closure and I lined the bag with some fleece I had in my fabric stash.

I am extremely happy with the way the bag turned out and have already taken orders for it.

So, onto the next project.

Happy New Year, I wish for 2013 to be happy and creative for all.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3233928826636583513.post-78827678581372097562012-11-12T08:30:00.000+00:002012-11-12T08:30:06.880+00:00Chalk Paint

My latest project has been to paint a stool.

The stool started out as a new step stool from Ikea. It looked really bland in its raw state. So, I used Annie Sloane chalk paints to create a distressed and cracked paint effect.

I think it turned out quite good and not too bad for a first attempt. What do you think?

This is my latest bracelet design. I had an idea for a multi strand bracelet and as I love blue and silver together, I came up with this. The silver plated tubes, beads and cat face charm all move along the blue cords.

I absolutely love it, I hope you do too.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3233928826636583513.post-45446318199093525142012-09-20T10:00:00.000+01:002012-09-20T10:00:05.958+01:00Crochet Blanket Project - on going!

I found the pattern in a magazine while visiting my aunt one day nearly 2 years ago. I started making this blanket almost straight away but had the idea that I would make it much larger than the pattern suggested. Currently, the blanket measures 68cm x 112cm which is 54 number of crochet squares.

I think that it is probably about time that I found the bag of yarn and pattern and got on and finished the blanket. Maybe it will be finished by Christmas (I think I might have said that last year)!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3233928826636583513.post-69916164228580169792012-09-19T11:30:00.000+01:002012-09-19T11:30:51.519+01:00Ta Daaaa!

Today's photo is of the finished red, gold and green beads and bangle I showed before in their raw state.

When I made the beads, I made them all different sizes and shapes. I didn't want them to be uniformly the same. When baked, I sanded and varnished the beads before making them into a long necklace which is spaced with 4mm Carnelian beads. The necklace also doubles as a wrap-around bracelet. The bangle just needed sanding and varnishing to finish it.

I really love the Mokume Gane effect and I am looking forward to the next time I can get my Sculpey polymer clay out to play.

I was browsing in the shops for a birthday card.

All the time I was looking, I was telling myself that I couldn't believe that I was considering buying a card when I have so many supplies ready to use and that I should go home and make a card instead. What I find hard is completing projects in a short space of time - I can never do a "quick card". I suddenly remembered about a kit I bought last year and that it would be perfect for the card I needed.

Thinking about the kit, I thought that since everything was in one box, it would be quick to make. Of course, I needed to trim the die cut decoupage, add detail with Sakura glitter and metallic pens and I added a little bit of 3D glaze too. So my quick card still took about an hour from start to finish!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3233928826636583513.post-2985688538492062102012-09-16T08:00:00.000+01:002012-09-16T08:00:04.700+01:00Quartz Ring

Made with punched flowers and a dimensional butterfly with a wire body and antenae. I used pearly doodles to add decoration down the side of the card.

To start with, you cast on 491 stitches which then decreases by 10 stitches every 8 rows until you have only 1 stitch left to cast off. Initially, each row took around 50 minutes to work the pattern and at first, I could only work 3 or 4 rows at a time before my hands or eyes objected!

The yarn is lovely and fine which makes the shawl perfect for dressing up an outfit or for just keeping the chill off.

The topper on the card was stamped and simply coloured before adding it to an easle card which also had a built in box for the gift. The gift was a Union flag pen which was made from polymer clay.

This bathtime image is fun and includes Soufle the Duck and soap bubbles also.

After stamping and colouring the images with ProMarkers and Sakura gel pens, the topper shape was die cut. The card was then finished with decorative papers.

A lovely result don't you think?
